woman receiving unique diy gift

Funky and unique DIY gifts that don’t cost much at all

We all know that feeling… you have to give a gift, but you don’t really have any ideas of what to give, you don’t want to spend a fortune, and you don’t want to give something that this person may already own. So what do you do? You read the rest of this article that’s what you do!

I know I feel this way often, so I’ve come up with a few super easy solutions that really help me in these types of situations.

GIFT IDEA #1

Find the coolest embroidered patches you can and stick ‘em on whatever the heck you want.

Embroidered patches are so trendy right now and they really make everything look cuter. Here’s how this works:

  1. Find some funky and cool patches that your gift-receiver would love.
  2. Find a blank product of some sort: makeup case, pencil case, tote bag, beach towel, baseball cap, etc. Fabrics like denim and cotton provide the best base for iron-on patches, keep this in mind!
  3. Figure out whether your patch is a glue-back, a cloth back, iron-on, etc. If it’s a sew on just don’t use it because that’s so annoying. I think iron-on and stick-on/glue-back are the best. Examine the material that you’re about to adhere the patch to. Try to figure out what kind of material you’re using and make sure it’s safe to iron if you’re using an iron-on patch.
  4. Get to it! Lay down the item you’re about to beautify and make sure you like the placement of the patch. Then stick it on, iron it on, pin it on. Booyah!
  5. Admire the beauty of the gift you’ve just created.

GIFT IDEA #2

This is perfect for a thank you gift, but can also be used for other occasions. But seriously, perfect thank you gift.

So what you’re going to do is get a little plant. Or a big plant, or whatever size plant you want. And you’re going to add a message to it that says: “Thank you for helping me grow.” HOW CUTE IS THAT? Here’s how this works:

  1. Decide what kind of plant you want. Size, shape, vase, pot, mason jar, etc. And then go out and get the plant.
  2. Look at your plant, check out the materials you’re working with and determine the best way to attach your message. You can paint the message on the item itself, you could attach a piece of string with a wooden square and write the message on there. There are so many creative approaches to writing your message, I’m sure you’ll think of something…
  3. Admire the beauty of the gift you’ve just created.

GIFT IDEA #3

A no sew blanket! A cute, comfy, handmade gift that is actually extremely useful.

This one is great for the colder months. Here’s how this works:

  1. Choose your fabric, you’ll need two pieces that are the same size. Fleece works the best for this project, trust me. You’ll want to purchase your fleece by the yard, I’d purchase anywhere from 1.5 to 3 yards of fabric depending on how large you want your blanket to be.
  2. Lay the two pieces of fleece on top of one another. Make sure they are the same size! If the sizes are slightly off that’s alright, but they really should be pretty much equal.
  3. Cut fringes on all four sides of the blankets. Make sure you’re using a good pair of scissors. You need to cut through the two pieces of fleece at the same time. The width of the fringe should be about an inch or two and the height should be about 5 inches. You’ll get the hang of it.
  4. Tie the two pieces of fringed material into a knot. Keep knotting the fringes all the way around the blanket until you’re done.
  5. Admire the beauty of the gift you’ve just created.

PS: this no sew fleece technique works for pillows too! Just insert the pillow before you finish knotting up all four sides.
