tevas cool again renaissance

Let’s Talk Tevas #FunctionFollowsForm

If Birkenstocks can be cool again, and Lizzy McGuire platform sandals can be cool again, then can we make Tevas cool too? Modern day fashionistas know one thing for sure: function follows form. And if nothing else, Tevas are function forward.

Why Tevas? They provide the comfort of flip-flops with greater utilitarian benefit. Unlike your standard flip flops, Tevas actually stay on your feet. They’re perfect for summer water activities, and if done right, they could pair well with ripped jeans and a graphic tee. Voila!

Birkenstocks took center stage at the ugly, yet adorable, comfy shoe show for a while. But come on guys, Birks had their time, let’s move on. It’s time for a Teva Renaissance. Scoot over Birkenstocks, there’s a new nerd in town; a kind of ugly, kind of adorable, totally comfy nerd.

Tevas are extremely lame in a way that makes them extremely desirable. We all know that one person who is super effortlessly cool/could be wearing a garbage bag and look fabulous. That person = Tevas

Anecdote Time: I wore Tevas almost every summer from 1995 (birth) till about 2009 when I started getting funny looks. My Tevas came back in 2011 when I took a trip to Israel. I knew I would be doing a lot of walking outside in the heat and sometimes in water. I needed a shoe that was both comfortable and waterproof. Looks didn’t matter, so I went with Tevas. Little did I know everyone in Israel wore Tevas and I fit right in.

Don’t argue with me that Tevas are ugly. That’s such a strong word. Not only has the brand totally amped up their style game, but companies such as Opening Ceremony have taken so great of a liking to Teva that they’ve even collaborated with them #ocxteva. For the newbs, Opening Ceremony is a pretty stylish company. How’s that for credibility?
